Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Magic: Do you believe?
The Arizona Humane Society has one question for you: do you believe in Magic? This handsome feline sure hopes you do! Although he is quite the crowd worker with his charm and good looks, this 6-year-old black shorthair kitty, unfortunately, does not have the most magical story.
With quite a history with AHS, Magic originally found his way to the shelter in 2021 after he was found abandoned. His previous owners were evicted and did not take him along. Rescued by an AHS Cruelty Investigator and given some TLC in the shelter, Magic was quickly adopted and has been there for the last two years.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago and this sweet kitty found himself at AHS once again due to his adopter being unable to care for him any longer. Luckily, he went through the right channels and made the difficult decision to surrender Magic back to AHS so he could find his true forever family. Loving and curious with a delightful spirit, he is sure to bring Magic to your heart and home.
How to adopt: In honor of PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, all adoptable pets at AHS’ PetSmart Scottsdale locations have 50% off their adoption fees today! Interested adopters can meet with magical Magic at the Arizona Humane Society’s PetSmart Scottsdale location. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Dusty Roads & Sofie Gal: Caring sisters
Truly a pair of beauties! These 11-year-old sisters are Dusty Roads (top) and Sofie Gal (bottom). They arrived at Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue as part of the Loving Legacy program. Their owner had made prior arrangements for them to go to 4 Paws if they were unable to care for them any longer.
The pair are both calicos, although Dusty has more of a tabby look. She has had a recent dental. Sophie is very outgoing, while Dusty is a bit shy at first. Both girls are very sweet. Sophie doesn’t like other cats but she sure loves her sister.
They look forward to their treats and seem to know just when they are forthcoming.
How to adopt: Being considered seniors, their adoption fee is only $30 each. They are residing at the shelter at 10807 N. 96th Ave., Peoria. Call 623-773-2246 after 10 a.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. Adoptable cats can also be seen at the Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Rd.

Aquadog: Full of puppy love
Although he may not be able to talk to fish or travel the seas with a trident like the comic book character he is semi-named after, Aquadog is certain to be as entertaining as his fictional counterpart. The absolutely adorable 5-month-old pit bull terrier mix was brought to the Arizona Humane Society all the way in January by a Good Samaritan who found him as a stray.
It was clear this puppy-eyed pup was in need of help when he started presenting with symptoms of an upper respiratory infection. Aquadog was treated in AHS’ trauma hospital as well as a loving Foster Hero home for his puppy cold. Overall, it took a few weeks to treat but he is now back to his healthy, energetic self!
With one look it is clear that there is some puppy mischief behind those eyes. Extremely wiggly, Aquadog loves getting attention, is an expert at playing and would benefit from some training. As with any cutie his age, he is extremely food motivated and will need some help learning the ropes on the road to becoming a well-socialized and happy adult dog.
How to adopt: In honor of PetSmart Charities National Adoption Week, today through Sunday, March 12 all adoptable pets at AHS’ PetSmart Scottsdale locations have 50% off their adoption fees! Interested adopters can meet with adventurous Aquadog at the Arizona Humane Society’s PetSmart Scottsdale location. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt to choose one of three convenient ways to adopt based on your schedule.

Lamborghini: Looking for affection
Lamborghini made his way to Friends for Life Animal Rescue by way of a county facility where he was turned in as a stray.
Lambo is listed as a Chihuahua/dachshund mix, around 3 years old, about 36 lbs, and has the cutest little legs.
Could there be some basset in there?
He currently lives with a foster family and they say he is a fun little guy that is doing great! He uses the doggie door and hasn’t had one accident in the house. He has been very friendly with everyone he’s met, even good with toddlers. He sleeps in his crate at the foot of their bed. He is a very sweet and affectionate dog.
How to adopt: Please email [email protected] if you would like to meet this silly boy, or come by the adoption center to speak with an adoption consultant. Lamborghini’s adoption fee is $295 and he is neutered, licensed, microchipped, and current on his vaccinations. Friends for Life Animal Rescue is located at 952 W. Melody Ave., Gilbert. For more information on other dogs or cats looking for homes visit azfriends.org, call 480-497-8296, or visit the adoption center.
