On Monday, Harkins Theatres announced plans for a “new family entertainment concept” that will open at the Shops at Norterra.
In addition to movies, Harkins BackLot (inspired by movie backlots) will include “a full-service restaurant and bar, Arizona’s largest sports viewing screens, expansive arcade for all ages, bowling and spacious private event spaces with party and corporate event rooms,” according to a release from Harkins.
Harkins BackLot will also include a sports-viewing arena with laser-projected screens, Brunswick bowling lanes, an outdoor patio and immersive virtual-reality experiences.
A restaurant with a “chef-inspired menu” will include burgers, flatbreads, sandwiches and desserts. The bar, restaurant and sports arena will serve cocktails, beer and wine.
Harkins Backlot is expected to open in north Phoenix in 2024.

Harkins plans more BackLot locations in the future
Harkins has completed renovations on most of its locations throughout the Valley. But the BackLot is its first foray into the full family-entertainment concept.
“Expanding our brand to dedicated family entertainment centers is a natural progression of our innovation legacy,” Mike Bowers, the CEO and president of Harkins Theatres, said in the release. “Our secret sauce is our unique ability to pair the fun of an entertainment center with the excitement of movies at our movie studio-themed BackLot entertainment centers.”
A planned BackLot location in the former Sears building at Chandler Fashion Center mall never got off the ground, but more BackLot locations will be announced soon, according to the release.
“Entertaining our friends and families is at the heart of what we have always done,” Dan Harkins, the owner of Harkins Theatres, said in the release. “I’m excited to build on that tradition with Harkins BackLot.”
