The undisputed king of electric
blues is scheduled to play to a
packed audience Friday night at
Centennial Hall.

BB King is one of the most well-
known living blues musicians in
the world, and certainly the most
famous person to ever come out
of the tiny town of Itta Bena,
Miss.

The 2000 census pegged Itta
Bena's population at about 4,000
residents living within a 1.5
square mile area.

Yet the town still managed to
make it into the 2000 Coen
brothers film, "O Brother, Where
Art Thou?"

In the movie, a notorious
gangster terrorizing the the
Deep South stops George
Clooney's character Everett and
his crew and asks them how to
get to Itta Bena.

Name the gangster and the
actor who played him for a
chance to win a set of three
cookbooks.

Shooters Steakhouse and Saloon

Shooters aims to dish out food and fun

In a city full of desert-colored ranch houses, Shooters Steakhouse and Saloon, 3115 E. Prince Road, is hard to miss.

Built in 1974 as El Jabala, a Moroccan belly dancing restaurant, the building with the domed roof and pointed arches on the northeast corner of Prince and Country Club roads has been Shooters for 14 years.

"It's a neighborhood place that has everything from blue collar to white collar customers," said owner Marcy Smith. "We've got a very eclectic crowd."

Diverse as it may be, there's something for everyone. There is a fire pit and two horseshoe pits in back of the restaurant, but on a recent chilly night, about 60 people milled around inside, shooting pool on the two pool tables, watching sports on the four TVs and taking turns at foosball and shuffleboard.

The dozen barstools and bar tables were full and a few of the 10 dining tables were filled with people grabbing late dinners. Soups, salads and starters range from $2.25-$6.95 and sandwiches and half-pound burgers are $4.95 to $7.25.

For larger appetites, the grill offers meals that range from a half chicken for $9.95 to the $17.95 Shooters Combo Grill, which includes a 6-ounce top sirloin steak, a quarter chicken and a quarter rack of ribs. Tuesdays and Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m. meals are cooked over a mesquite grill in the courtyard, which is decorated with a fountain, plants and heat lamps that keep the 15 outside tables warm.

Shooters serves lunches and dinners from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with food and drink specials during happy hour from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The full bar offers drinks ranging from $2.25 to $10 for a shot of a top-shelf liquor.

Every Wednesday and Sunday, Shooters hosts a popular karaoke night starting at 9 p.m. with thousands of songs to choose and a big-screen TV displaying the lyrics. After singing a convincing rendition of Alicia Keys' "Falling," Jennifer Brady, 29, a semi-finalist in the recent Tucson and Pima County Karaoke Championship, said Shooters is one of the better places to do karaoke in town.

"I like the big-screen TV and the sound system," she said. "I come to sing, and I come to drink."
