UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Lariat's Battle of the Bands has top prize worth $3,000

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 07.09.2009
The Lariat, Catalina's historic steakhouse and nightclub, is seeking the best rock band in the Tucson area.
Or the best country outfit.
Or perhaps it will be jazz or pop.
Actually, genre isn't a factor in the Lariat's all-encompassing Battle of the Bands, launched this week.
Neither is age; you can enter if you're under 21, so long as a legal guardian accompanies you to the weekly battle performances, held at 9 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays through late September.
The winners will be named on Oct. 3.
Bands will compete much in the format of "American Idol," where they can be weeded out by the panel of three judges and the audience.
Here's how the Lariat tweaks it, though: The act that draws the biggest audience wins the audience vote, said Lariat spokesman Mark Bonacorso.
The top winner will walk away with a prize package worth $3,000, Bonacorso said. It includes paid gigs at the Lariat, $1,000 in limo service certificates from Limoport and $500 in Lariat gift certificates.
For information on how to enter, prizes and contest rules, go to www.lariatsteakhouseaz. com/bands
The Lariat is at 16666 N. Oracle Road.
