A 'year-end' Friday Shorts showdown at the Loft
The monthly madness at the Loft Cinema known as First Friday Shorts will culminate with a "year-end" showdown on Friday.
The past 12 winners of the competition will go head-to-head for a $1,000 cash prize, a trophy and a year's worth of free Loft admission.
The smackdown, hosted as always by the gong-wielding Max Cannon, starts at 9 Friday. It'll cost you five bucks.
Great Apache warrior featured in PBS series on Monday night
The PBS series "We Shall Remain" is a mesmerizing history of the United States, as experienced by Native Americans.
Narrated by Benjamin Bratt, the five-part series explores incidents that are mostly ignored in American classrooms, delving into one tragic chapter after another.
On Monday at 9 p.m., the series spotlights Geronimo, the Apache warrior who led the last Native American force to capitulate to the U.S. government. The photo below was taken near Willcox circa 1886, the year Geronimo surrendered in a canyon northeast of Douglas.
Wilco's 'Ashes of American Flags' at the Rialto tonight
Maybe you've already bought your ticket to Wilco's June 18 show at Centennial Hall. (The closest pair of seats we could get earlier this week were in the balcony.)
If you've been wondering what the group has been doing lately, you might want to head to the Rialto Theatre tonight.
Wilco's new DVD, the just-released "Ashes of American Flags," will be shown on the Rialto's fancy new projector.
"Ashes of American Flags," which follows the band during its 2008 tour, is said to be less a typical road documentary and more of a cerebral lament.
Directed by Brendan Canty and Christoph Green, the movie tags along with Wilco as it performs in historic music venues in New Orleans, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nashville and Washington,D.C.
"While the film never says it, the implied commentary is that genuine music, much like the authenticity of small downtowns, is slowly succumbing to rust," said a review on Popmatters.com.
Admission to the movie, which starts at 8:30 p.m., is a mere $2.
UA Native American films Friday
Highlights of films made by Native American students will be screened at 6 p.m. Friday at the Gallagher Theater in the UA Student Union.
The short documentaries ("The Chiefs' Prophecy," "Changes From Within" and "Sons of Two Cultures") were made as part of a project inspired by the current PBS series, "We Shall Remain." Admission is free.
See Rat Pack on a big screen again at Tuesday's screening of 'Ocean's 11'
The Loft Cinema will morph into mid-20th-century Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a screening of the original "Ocean's Eleven" (1960). Admission is $7. Presented by Broadway in Tucson, the night begins with a pre-film singalong to tunes fromthe likes of Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., both of whom star in the film, along with Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Angie Dickinson and Joey Bishop. The plot follows 11 friends who met during World War II as they knock off five Vegas casinos in a single night. It's a lark that was directed by 2-time best director Oscar winner Lewis Milestone.
