UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

New steakhouse in NW

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.16.2008
Alex Coomer has come home to Picture Rocks. He's fired up the mesquite grills at his father's old cafe and is serving up certified Angus beef and lemon-herb chicken to his neighbors and anyone making the trip through the mountain pass to the Northwest Side.
The ink on Coomer's political science bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona wasn't even dry when he set about renovating his father's old Picture Rocks Cafe building.
His dad, who passed away two years ago, ran the cafe only a short while before he started leasing it to other operators, including a greasy spoon, a Mexican restaurant and a bar.
"It's been an intense project," the 23-year-old Coomer said. "I'm pretty ambitious; I've done well at what I've tried, so I feel capable of it."
Last week, he opened the Picture Rocks Horseshoe Steakhouse & Saloon, where he mesquite-grills chicken, seafood, veggies and those 100 percent Angus steaks and burgers. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner. Breakfast runs $5-$7. Dinner entrees run $10-$25. The restaurant is at 6575 N. Sandario Road, just south of Picture Rocks Road. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, 7-11 a.m. and 5-9 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
The "saloon" part of the name is a misnomer for now; the restaurant won't have its liquor license for about 90 days, Coomer said.
