UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

THE SCORE

Jump around with Everlast Tuesday at the Rock

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.16.2008
Everlast, a former rapper for '90s hip-hop group House Of Pain, had a nearly fatal heart attack and turned into a folk singer.
He had some major radio hits in the late '90s with the album, "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues," particularly the smash "What It's Like" and then later as a guest on Santana's 1999 album, " Supernatural" with the song "Put Your Lights On."
Recently, he's scored some success with a cover of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" off his 2008 album, "Love, War and the Ghost of Whitey Ford."
He comes to The Rock on Tuesday night, in a show presented by the Rialto Theatre, with The Lordz.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 day of show. The show starts at 8 p.m. For more info, go to rialtotheatre.com.

Von Iva at Plush on Friday
San Francisco dancey rock act Von Iva comes to Plush Friday, but openers PacificUV are also worth checking out.
The Portland band wrote to make sure we checked out their music, a sometimes hazy, atmospheric delicate storm that can recall the tender moments of Sigur Ros and the dark heart of Interpol.
Also opening is Four Five Six at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $6.

On Friday, a cabaret show at St. Philip's in the Hills
St. Philip's In the Hills Friends of Music, responsible for bringing Tucson a variety of musical events, is going cabaret on Friday.
The Friends will host its 11th annual Cabaret fundraiser, featuring the adult choirs at St. Philip's in a showcase of solo and ensemble numbers that includes such Broadway gems as "I Got Rhythm," "No Business Like Show Business," "Standin' on the Corner," "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," "My Funny Valentine," "What'll I Do?," "Side by Side" and "Geographical Fugue."
Some of Tucson's finest performers — among them voalists Elena Todd, Larry Alexander, Mary Paul, Laurel Decker and Arizeder Urreiztieta, and pianists Mary Baker, Bonnie Bird and Jeffrey Campbell — are along for the ride, casting themselves in a more casual setting than some longtime fans might be used to.
The fun starts with a reception at 7 p.m. and the show at 7:30 at the Bloom Music Center of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave. Tickets are $25.
