UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Millville awash in arts classes, from hip-hop dance to guitar

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.16.2008
In addition to the classes at the Rhythm Industry Performance Factory mentioned on Page 27, there are plenty of ways you can get involved with the arts in Millville.
• The Danceloft (thedanceloft.com) offers a variety of classes covering ballet, modern, hip-hop and more. Hip hop classes are taught by Anton Smith, director of the Human Project hip-hop ensemble.
• The 17th Street Guitars and World Music store offers free guitar classes for beginners on Thursdays and drumming circles on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Live-music acts from around Tucson perform at the store on Saturdays. For times and other info, go online to treasureshidden.com.
The market will celebrate the grand reopening of 17th Street Guitars in its new space with a free blues-guitar and acoustic-instrument workshop hosted by national artist Steve James on Wednesday and a luthier show with free performances from Stefan George and Harvey Brooks on Oct. 25. Wednesday's workshop begins at 4:30 p.m., and the Oct. 25 event starts at 10 a.m.
• The dazzling spectacle and Tucson tradition known as the All Souls Procession (www. allsoulsprocession.org) happens north of Millville and among the participants are many Rhythm Industry arts groups, including Flam Chen, Batucaxé and Odaiko Sonora. Anyone can join the procession, which starts at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 at the intersection of East University Boulevard and North Fourth Avenue. Read more about the procession in future editions of Caliente.
