UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Roots rocker James Intveld in concert at the Hut on Friday

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.21.2008
John Waters fans should get a kick out of roots rocker James Intveld, who is playing Friday night at The Hut, 305 N. Fourth Ave. When Johnny Depp's character in "Cry-Baby" declared himself the king through song, it was Intveld who provided the vocals.
Intveld also lent his voice to the Waters film "A Dirty Shame," Sean Penn's "Indian Runner" and the HBO baseball documentary, "61."
He began his music career with his younger brother Ricky and buddy Pat Woodward in a band called the Rockin' Shadows. James would eventually move on to work with rockabilly vocalist Rosie Flores.
He also created a memorial album for his brother and Woodward after they died in a plane crash while touring with Ricky Nelson.
Intveld comes to The Hut with his new album, "Have Faith," a mix of honky-tonk, rockabilly and gospel-tinged melodies.
The show starts at 9:30 p.m. and admission is $5.
