UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

This week's hot 5 events

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.07.2008
Hot L.A. hip-hop acts Uberzone, 2Mex coming for separate shows
It's set to be a busy weekend for DJ Corbin Dooley and the local promotions group Phat Entertainment. On Friday, they help present an evening of independent hip-hop featuring 2Mex and the Smob headlining at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. 2Mex is a big deal in his native Los Angeles, a member of The Visionaries, who got his start as half of the hip-hop group OMD. The Smob consists of a hip-hop collective from Phoenix that has been touring with 2Mex throughout the West. The show begins at 10 p.m. and tickets are $5 in advance and $8 the day of the show; 622-8848. It will pave the way for Dooley and Phat Entertainment's bigger show, a Rialto concert Saturday night featuring the electro-funk pioneer Uberzone, pictured at right. Another Los Angeles native, Uberzone comes to town to promote his latest album, "Ideology." Doors for that show open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance, $20 the day of the show before 9 p.m. and $25 after; 740-1000.
Rock at the Hut to raise bucks for three-story tiki head statue
The Hut is more than halfway toward its goal of raising enough money to install a three-story tiki statue at its front entrance.
The head formerly belonged to Magic Carpet Golf, which closed in January.
The nightclub, at 305 N. Fourth Ave., has scheduled a concert this Sunday at 9:30 p.m. to raise money for the effort to transport and install the statue.
The lineup includes UpRooted, a reggae/rock band, and the Happy Ending Island Jams with Skitn's Chris Calvo. Admission is free, but there is a suggested $3 donation.
The Hut isn't the only party interested in buying a piece of Magic Carpet history.
At least four statues (including a spider, a haunted stump and a castle) are slated to move to the Valley of the Moon, 2544 E. Allen Road, once landscaping is completed later this year. The now-idle Moon is the former home of magician George Phar Legler and plays host to an annual Halloween children's play.
Puppy Games '08 score gold
Want even more Olympics? "Puppy Games 2008" paws its way onto television sets Friday night on Animal Planet.
These games feature dozens of pups of various breeds from around the world participating in a series of athletic challenges, from boxing to swimming to soccer.
The games air on the same night as the Olympics' opening ceremonies with an encore performance to be shown on Aug. 23.
This event is from the same minds who bring you "Puppy Bowl," shown every year on Super Bowl Sunday. "Puppy Games 2008" begins at 6 p.m.
Read the Star's Sports section for daily coverage of the real Olympic Games.
The best in local music and, hey, you get in free
The Tucson Weekly announces its annual picks for the standouts in the Tucson music scene, better known as The Tammies, at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rialto Theatre.
The awards are voted on by both various critics in town and fans.
The event will feature food and live performances from the likes of the folk-rocking Golden Boots, the sweltering blues of Tom Walbank and the vintage desert rock of the Sand Rubies.
Admission is free.
Learn more about yoga Tuesday at the Loft
Fight the temptation to chant Om while watching "Living Yoga" Tuesday at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway — that's even more annoying than forgetting to turn off your cell phone.
The Arizona Yoga Association presents the hour-long look at how Swami Satchidananda brought classical yoga tradition to the West.
The film starts at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for members of the yoga association and the Loft, and $6 for everyone else.
