UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Phoenix, Tucson rockers hit Club Congress
Club Congress on Friday hosts a meeting of the Tucson and Phoenix music scenes.
From the Phoenix area, we get two of mid-Arizona's best with the fiery, poetic rock of Dear and the Headlights and the poppy-psychedelia of What Laura Says.
Representing Tucson are the classic rock of Holy Rolling Empire and the easygoing tones of Crossing Sarnoff.
You can't go wrong with any of the bands on this bill, especially considering that $5 gets you in. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Paul Simon-type act will be at Plush on Sunday
One of the cooler shows this week is going to be Eef Barzelay at Plush on Sunday night.
Barzelay has a Mountain Goats, Paul Simon-type vibe with a little more electricity in the instruments and a tendency to lean on the dreamier side of alt-rock. Good stuff.
Local Tracy Shedd will open the show at 9:30 p.m. The cover charge is $8.

Hear heavy psychedelic to indie-pop at Plush
On Wednesday Plush has Los Angeles' Imaad Wasif with Two Part Beast, which has this sometimes heavy, spiraling psychedelic sound that can just as easily morph into gentle acoustics. Opening is California's trippy El Olio Wolof, which weaves intricate, storybook lyrics with breezy melodies.
Starting off the show are Tucson's indie-pop rockers RCougar.
The show will cost you $7, and it starts at 9:30 p.m.
