Loft salutes 'Patton' and 'Team America' on the Fourth
The Loft Cinema will celebrate the Fourth of July with a screening of "Patton" in the afternoon and a singalong screening of "Team America: World Police" in the evening.
The stirring "Patton" (1970) won seven Academy Awards, including a best-actor honor for George C. Scott, right, who famously refused to accept it.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone's "Team America: World Police" didn't win any Oscars, but the 2004 marionette musical won a cult following that seems to be growing more devoted every year. It's a vicious and vulgar satire about the nation's response to terrorism.
"Patton" is at 1 p.m. Friday, and the "Team America" singalong is at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 each.
The legendary Leon Russell back at the Fox on Wednesday
Grammy Award-winning rock legend Leon Russell returns to the Fox Tucson Theatre Wednesday for an encore to his 2006 Fox show.
The historic Downtown theater is a fine setting for the former session player and singer-songwriter, whose tunes have been staples for B.B. King, Joe Cocker and a slew of other performers.
Among the many hit songs written by the Oklahoma native are "Lady Blue," "A Song for You" and "This Masquerade."
Russell's 2006 show was marred by sound issues; some of his fans complained the concert was just too loud. Organizers say that won't be an issue this time; all the technical kinks (cross your fingers!) are ironed out.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $25 and $40 through the Fox, 17 W. Congress St., or by calling 547-3040.
Good Rev. brings heat Monday
The Reverend Horton Heat did the unthinkable a couple decades ago: He set country and punk on a collision course, creating aptly dubbed punkabilly.
It's a raucous and gritty sound, with psychotic flashes that appeal to metalheads, rockabilly scenesters and guitar geeks alike.
A performer known for his wildly energetic concerts, he's thrilled Tucson audiences several times over the last 20 years.
You can catch Heat (aka Jim Heath), joined by Jimbo Wallace on upright bass and Paul Simmons on drums, in an all-ages show at 8 p.m. Monday at the Rialto Theatre. The bill also includes Supersuckers and Nashville Pussy. Tickets are $25 in advance, $27 at the door.
'Great Gatsby' inspires burlesque show tonight
F. Scott Fitzgerald's great novel of 1920s excess, "The Great Gatsby," is the driving force behind tonight's Book Club Burlesque Variety Show at Club Congress.
The event, which starts at 8 p.m., promises to showcase "some fabulously creative talent," according to organizers.
It's the seventh show inspired by literary works, following evenings devoted to such works as "Lolita" and "The Scarlet Letter."
Admission is $3.
Go back into the water with 'Jaws' at 7:30 tonight
Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," which kicked off the era of summer blockbusters in 1975, will scare moviegoers once again at tonight's outdoor screening at Cinema La Placita.
Next week's movie is "Tootsie" (1982), a tribute to Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack, who died May 26.
The screenings start at 7:30 p.m. each Thursday Downtown in La Placita Village Plaza, 110 S. Church Ave.
A donation of $3 to $5 is appreciated.
