UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

THE SCORE

Female rap trio brings its energy to Club Congress

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.08.2008
Northern State, a female rap trio from New York, will play Club Congress on Monday.
The former Tegan and Sara tour mates often draw comparisons to The Beastie Boys, and their live shows bring a similar amount of energy.
The girls are promising much audience participation on this tour, so get ready.
Opening the all-ages 7 p.m. show are punkers The Dollyrots. Tickets are $9 in advance and $11 day of show.
Missouri group will show you Saturday
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin recalls a bouncy, pop-obsessed love child of the Beach Boys and Weezer.
The Missouri group will play an all-ages show at Club Congress on Saturday with Portland's Port O'Brien.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are $9 in advance, $10 day of show.
Hear blend of bluegrass, folk and rock at Plush
Langhorne Slim's show Monday at Plush could be one of those catch-him-while-you-can moments.
The singer/songwriter recently performed on "The Late Show With David Letterman," and his new album, "Restless," is a lighthearted blend of catchy folk, bluegrass and rock, like Sufjan Stevens' Red Bull-swigging hillbilly cousin.
Cathy Rivers' project Little Black Cloud will open at 9:45 p.m. The cover is $8.
Dallas pop-rock act in town on Sunday
Dallas' The New Frontiers occupies that middle ground between major-label stature and indie appeal.
The band's songs have a bittersweet, downtrodden feel, but with an accessible presentation like Coldplay.
New Frontiers plays Solar Culture on Sunday with Phoenix's Alive in Wild Paint, another sentimental pop-rock act.
Sunday seems like the perfect night for this 8 p.m. show. It'll cost you $10.
Guitarist to play solo at Solar Culture Saturday
Moris Tepper has played guitar for such veteran acts as Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and Frank Black.
His solo music is as across-the-board and interesting as the artists listed above, from funk to ballads to jangly rock. He's playing a solo show at Solar Culture on Saturday night. It starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $8. Opening are Tucson's Golden Boots and Metal.
Veteran group AMC brings tunes to Plush
Veteran act American Music Club reunited in 2004 after a 10-year hiatus. "The Golden Age," which was released earlier this year, is the group's second album since the members got back together.
AMC will bring its melancholy tunes to Plush on Tuesday night.
Jose Saavedra will open the show at 9:30. Cost is $10.
