UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Celtic Woman to serenade Old Pueblo

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.08.2008
Celtic Woman's Tucson concert on Monday will be its 29th show since the beginning of April, so we can imagine the all-woman ensemble finding the music from its latest album, "A New Journey," a little old.
There is only so many times one can travel "Over the Rainbow" and "Beyond the Sea" before the urge to kill or head back home sets in.
The Old Pueblo may be toward the tail-end of Celtic Woman's latest string of shows, but we expect nothing but the best in form and class from this powerhouse ensemble of singers and musicians.
The group, born from a PBS special of the same name in 2004, spoiled Tucson fans in 2005 with an elaborate stage show at Centennial Hall featuring traditional Celtic music, lavish backdrops and theatrics.
This visit promises more of the same with tunes from "A New Journey" and new members, including Alex Sharpe who is filling in for vocalist Lisa Kelly while Kelly is on maternity leave.
Celtic Woman comes back to Centennial Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Tickets are $35-$57 through the Centennial Hall box office, 621-3341.
