UA homecoming this weekend is
all about Wilbur the Wildcat - the
beloved and furry mascot turns
50 on Saturday.

The UA used real animals as
mascots off and on between the
early 1900s and the late 1950s
(with at least one tragic mishap),
until two UA students (Richard
Heller and John Paquette)
pitched the idea of using a
costume-wearing human.

Wilbur made his first appearance
at the UA vs. Texas Tech football
game on Nov. 7, 1959, and was
an immediate hit, according to a
UA Web site.

Wilbur's look has evolved over the
years. It was during one of those
costume makeovers that Wilma
the Wildcat was created.

She made her first public
appearance on March 1, 1986,
during a "blind date" with Wilbur.
The pair later "married" before an
Arizona-Arizona State football
game.

For a chance to win a a set of
three audio books, tell us the
date of their wedding.

Meet some musicians

• Vic Chesnutt is a prolific singer/songwriter from Atlanta. He's also a big fan and associate of Giant Sand's Howe Gelb. "That dude is a huge, huge influence on me," Chesnutt recently told aznightbuzz's Daysleeper blog. "It's hard to downplay his influence on me. Before I met him in 1990, I loved Giant Sand. He's one of my favorite lyric writers ever."
• Loud, raucous and always outspoken, punk icon and spoken-word artist Jello Biafra last came through town on the Punk Voter tour on the eve of the 2004 presidential elections.
• Orange County-based band Limbeck makes fun, jingly alt-country pop tunes inspired by life on the road. The hard touring band even has a song called "Comin' From Tucson" on its 2003 album "Hi, Everything's Great."
• Over six albums, Austin, Texas-based rocker Ian Moore has slowly neglected his bluesy rock roots in favor of an adventurous sound that embraces everything from spirited alt-country and folk to psychedelic Beatle-esque pop.
